Clinical Somatic Movement Education (CSE) is a hands-on, process-oriented approach to movement re-education developed by Thomas Hanna and taught at SOMAdublin by certified Clinical Somatic Educator Katrin Neue. Rather than manipulating the body from the outside, the practitioner works with you on a wide, low table, guiding your movements and providing tactile feedback so you can learn to release stiff, habituated muscular tensions in full-body patterns. The range of motion always stays within your control, and painful movements are never pushed through; you remain the active participant, regaining agency over how you move.
In CSE sessions and related Somatic Movement Education classes, you learn self-care movements designed to increase awareness of habitual muscle tensions in the front, back, and sides of the body so you can consciously release them. The work is not about speed, weight loss, fitness, or making aesthetic shapes; it is a sensory-awareness training that helps you become more present to sensation, gravity, breath, tension, and softness in the here and now. By addressing how stress is held in the body and teaching more efficient, smooth, and controlled movement patterns, CSE supports people with chronic or recurring aches and pains, functional disorders, post-surgical or post-accident issues, and those who flare up easily in general fitness classes. It can also be used as a supportive modality alongside counseling or psychotherapy for conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression, while not replacing medical or psychological treatment.
Ideally, CSE is experienced as a short series of sessions spaced about a week apart, followed by a committed daily home practice of the self-care exercises you learn. This structure is intended to help you take responsibility for your body, refine your sensory-motor control, and stay pain-free without becoming dependent on regular “fix-it” sessions. At SOMAdublin, this approach is offered through private hands-on lessons, mat-based sessions, and beginner courses such as “Foundations in Somatics,” which provide a modern, Hanna Somatics-based introduction to practical movements for releasing tension, improving breathing, and enhancing overall movement ability.
